Background & Research

Who is this guide for?

This guide/survival kit is intended for tech savvy proffesionals living in San Francisco who commute to work using SF MUNI.

What's the point of this?

There are generally a few things this segment of the population needs to know about when they wake up in the morning:

  • What's the weather going to be like today?
  • The micro climates in San Francisco always make this a very real concern to everyone in the city. Will I need an umbrella today, or can I get away with just taking my hoodie with me?

  • When's the next bus going to show up?
  • How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? I don't know the answer to that question either but using this service will help you figure out when the next bus will show up, or if it got into some sort of unfortunate incident which will throw off your entire day. Out of all the things that happen in the morning this is probably the most important one of all.

  • What important things happened while I was asleep?
  • It depends on what you consider to be important. The goal here is to give the user the choice of selecting what's most important to them. By having a va- riety of choices of news services as well as topics the service will keep people connected to things they actually care about.

    What's the competition doing?

Pulse News Reader is a service which lets users stay up to date with several different news sites/blogs. It allows users to add specific websites to it and then automatically updates throughout the day as necessary.
Nextbus is a service which shows users when the next bus is coming for their specific transit stop or transit line.
Like Nextbus, Routesy also shows users when the next transit line will show up at a specific stop. In addition to this it also has trip planning capabilities.
News 360 is also a news service but rather than letting users select specific sites it instead asks them to select a variety of topics and then serves up articles related to those topics randomly.
